Summer in the Upstate: Five Favorite Local Getaways

The Upstate is at its most generous in summer. The Blue Ridge softens at the edges, the rivers run cold and clear, and the porch becomes the most useful room in the house. Five getaways we keep coming back to — none more than two hours from Greenville.

Caesars Head State Park

A forty-five minute drive up Highway 276 brings you to one of the prettiest overlooks east of the Mississippi. Pack a picnic, walk Raven Cliff Falls, and stay for sunset. The view of the foothills rolling toward Atlanta is worth the climb.

Lake Jocassee

Glassy water surrounded by undeveloped shoreline — a rare combination in the Southeast. Rent a pontoon from Devils Fork or join one of the small-group waterfall tours. The deep coves stay cool even in August.

Brevard, North Carolina

Just across the state line. A walkable downtown, the Davidson River for trout fishing, and the kind of bookshop you mean to leave in twenty minutes and find yourself in for two hours. Lunch at Mayberry's, dinner at Square Root.

Travelers Rest

Closer to home. Park downtown, ride the Swamp Rabbit Trail to Tandem Creperie, and let the afternoon stretch. The Saturday morning farmers market is the best in the Upstate.

Highlands, North Carolina

Worth the longer drive when the temperature in town breaks ninety. Stay at the Old Edwards Inn, walk Sunset Rocks at golden hour, and have a martini at Madison's. It's where everyone goes when they want to feel both quiet and dressed up.
